Friday Round-Up: Gender Equality Edition

In honor of the first all-female spacewalk that occurred today, we bring you a gender equality-themed round-up for this week’s edition.

October 5th was International Girls in Aviation Day and Delta celebrated by having an all-women crew fly 120 girls aged 12 – 18 from Salt Lake City to NASA in Houston, TX.

Although there are some who would scoff at the gender pay gap, the ramifications of women on average earning only 79 cents for every dollar made by their male counterparts are illuminated by two personal stories by two staffers at The Ascent.

It’s doubtful that the pay gap will be eliminated anytime soon as, according to CNBC.com, the US lags other countries in funding programs to promote gender equality in the workplace.

And while the US government and private business might not be investing in gender equality, Melinda Gates has pledged $1 billion to promote it over the next ten years according to Forbes.

Another brighter note for this issue is how Salesforce closed the pay gap between men and women while also dealing with unconscious bias and providing mentorship programs.
