Friday Round-Up: Technology Edition

Smartphones, streaming, internet: our networked world offers lots of opportunities as well as being this week’s theme of round-up stories.

Comcast is the largest cable company in the US with almost 22 million video subscribers and over 26 million internet subscribers. If you’re one of those subscribers, the fact that Comcast broke Washington state law almost half a million times and has to pay refunds to 50,000 customers and pay a $9.1 million fine might be of interest.

Streaming services have hit the cable industry hard, but AT&T is fighting back via its WarnerMedia subsidiary with a video streaming service to compete with Netflix and Hulu with content from HBO, Cinemax and Warner Bros. for between $16-17 per month.

Tech behemoth Google could be dealing with antitrust issues and monopoly allegations as part of a Justice Department probe.

Among the many annoyances that come hand-in-hand with technological convenience, robocalls ranks high on the list. A recent FCC ruling permits phone companies to automatically block robocalls, but according to this Life Hacker article, that service may cost you.

Fortunately this Money Talks News post offers do-it-yourself tips for 7 ways to stop robocalls.

And while all this dystopian technology may have you feeling like you’re trapped in The Matrix, we leave you with what the internet is best at: cute animal videos. Here’s Matrix star Keanu Reeves answering fan mail while playing with puppies. You’re welcome.
