This week’s Rewarding Moment comes from Kelly Mckeon who joined MyPoints in July 2007–so long ago she can’t remember how she discovered the program.
Her favorite ways to earn are via online shopping or travel.
This is her story:
“We tap our own maple trees and make maple syrup.
The boiling process is time consuming. To make one gallon of syrup you have to reduce 40 gallons of sap by boiling it. The first few years we only spent 2-3 days boiling sap throughout the late winter.
As we got better at it, it was taking days and days of 9-10 hours each to reduce the sap to the syrup stage. A reverse osmosis filter can cut the boiling time by removing some of the water ahead of the boiling.
We found a science teacher, online, who created a reverse osmosis kit for backyard boilers. We used our Points to [redeem for] PayPal…to then purchase a reverse osmosis kit.
Now, instead of a 9 hour day to boil, it takes about 5-6 hours.
We’ve been able to expand our syrup making to include taps at trees of friends and family. That’s more maple syrup to share.”
